Contact Tracer

A PwC Product

A bluetooth-enabled solution to help stay safe in the new normal.

COVID-19 has significantly disrupted working practices and healthcare systems around the world - pivoting operations and processes to build resilience for the years ahead. With the workplace being no exception, there was an overnight need to pivot and incorporate 'contact tracing' - a process of identifying individuals who were or are in proximity of infected persons and tracing their movements to highlight risks to society.

While the world stands in line for a vaccine or cure, contact tracing remains one of the most important methods in reducing the spread of infection.

Contact tracing teams have been working round the clock for more than 13 hours a day, tracing back the steps of anyone who’s contracted the illness. The system is labour-intensive, relying on surveillance footage, ATM and travel records, and a dedicated team of contact tracers, who map out where the infected patient has been in the days and weeks before they were diagnosed with COVID-19.

Introducing the Contact Tracer app

Pioneered in February 2020 when the world was entering the threshold of a pandemic, the idea was born from PwC Experience Centre’s bluetooth-enabled door system, which automatically unlocks our doors when authorised phones are within 2 metres of it. This led us to create a simple, but effective solution for COVID-19 contact tracing, that swaps a digital signature with anyone in close contact with - and in turn, any individual that person has been in contact with too.

How does it work?

1. The user carries a Contact Tracing device - either a small bluetooth token paired with an invisible companion mobile app, or a Contract Tracing standalone device. The user’s device scans for other tokens nearby.
2. When one or more other tokens are detected, their presence is uploaded to the platform server. The platform then aggregates this data and produces a visual network of people who have been in proximity with each other, grouped by location and time of contact.
3. If a suspected case occurs, we can then immediately understand the people at risk, and take action immediately and automatically.

Beyond COVID-19

When the world moves on from the pandemic, the solution can continued to be deployed across verticals and industries. The variation of our solution and included technoloogy could help to provide notifications, and drive higher engagement between users and their physical and digital environments. Paired with different technologies, more opportunities become available to enable users. We are currently exploring opportunities across smart workplaces, supply chains, manufacturing and port facilities, along with the implementation within gallery and immersive spaces.
